Mission statement

Our vision is to shed light into key reproductive and developmental processes of broad significance, using a range of approaches from molecular, cellular and evolutionary biology to computational science, and exploiting an important, but virtually unexplored, eukaryotic supergroup: the brown algae. Importantly, studying seaweeds offers a broader taxonomic view of biology, exploring avenues away from the classical plant-animal dichotomy, and allowing access to the universality, or uniqueness, of the mechanisms driving fundamental biological processes in the scope of the tree of life. We aim to provide solid foundations for the future advances of brown algal developmental biology and comparative molecular biology and to catch up to the advances in animals and plants in this area. Therefore, training the next generation of leaders in algal research is also very important to us.
