Confocal microscopes

Leica Sp2 [Room 1.B.19]

This confocal microscope is equipped with an Argon laser (excitation lines 458 nm, 476 nm 488 nm and 514 nm) and two He-ne lasers (excitation lines at 543 nm and 633 nm respectively). The system has also 3 pmt detectors in the reflection mode and one in transmission allowing the acquisition of confocal images in reflection and DIC images in transmission.

 


Zeiss LSM 5live [Room 2.A.05]

This is a parallel scanning confocal that offers high speed as well as sensitivity and it is the ideal platform for in vivo confocal imaging. This system can acquire 100 or more frames per second and it is equipped with 2 detectors and 4-excitation laser lines i.e. 405 nm, 488 nm, 561 nm and 635 nm. It is often used for multi channel live embryo imaging.


Zeiss LSM 510 [Room 2.A.18]

This confocal microscope has an argon laser  (excitation lines 458 nm, 477 nm, 488 nm and 514),  and two He-ne lasers (excitation lines at 543 nm and 633 nm respectively). Over two standard PMTs the microscope has a CCD camera that is used as Meta detector i.e. allows using up to 8 acquisition channels simultaneously. DIC is also available.


Olympus flowview FV1000 [Room 3.A.17]

This confocal microscope offers the following range of excitation lines: 405 nm, 488 nm, 515 nm, 532 nm 559 nm and 635 nm. The 532 nm line comes from a high repetition rate pulsed laser and it is used for ablation purposes and FRET microscopy.  The unique feature of this microscope is that it has 2 laser scanner units that can work simultaneously allowing to scan large sample areas while bleaching or ablating in a smaller region. Thus this microscope is also ideal for ablation applications, FRET as well as  FRAP experiments. Finally the system is suitable for DIC and has three PMT detectors in the reflection and one in transmission detection path.


 

 

 

Wide field microscopes

Several Zeiss and Leica wide field microscopes are distributed along our institute allowing the acquisition of fluorescence, bright field and DIC images. In between them there are two special systems

Zeiss Apotome [Room 2.A.04]

This is a new generation wide field fluorescence microscope that permits to introduce optical sectioning during imaging by the use of structured illumination grid into the field stop position. This system permits to acquire wide field images without out of focus blur and it is ideal for the imaging of very bright fluorescent samples i.e. the image resolution in this case is similar to the confocal resolution.
