As a part of the general services of the Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology, the Electron Microscopy Unit and the associated service group for photography, image processing and graphics support scientists in all areas of microscopy and in professional presentation of data.

The Electron Microscopy Unit offers instrumentation, service, training and advice. Skilled technicians provide the appropiate preparation techniques for microscopy of molecules, cells, tissues or entire specimens. Techniques used include negative staining, metal shadowing, cryofixation (e.g. high-pressure freezing), freeze-substitution, critical-point drying, embedding & ultrathin sectioning. Samples can be examined by confocal microscopy, transmission or scanning electron microscopy. In addition to the morphological characterization, we also help with immunolocalization of gene products. Here the main goal is the preservation of both antigenicity and structural integrity using cryofixation in combination with freeze-substitution and low-temperature embedding. Our approach of fluorescence and electron microscopy on immunolabelled ultrathin sections, using improved specimen preparation, allows a detailed description of complex living systems.
