The institute provides Sanger sequencing on an ABI 3730xl DNA Analyzer, both for individual samples and higher-throughput projects, such as shotgun sequencing of libraries from BACs or fosmids.

For next generation sequencing, the genome center houses two Illumina Genome Analyzer II instruments. The institute was one of the first in Europe to acquire this technology in June 2007. Department 6 has developed analysis tools for Illumina short reads, available through their 1001 Genomes project website.
